INNOVATIONS IN URBAN INFRASTRUCTURE THROUGH SMART POLES: A SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS MODEL FOR IOT TECHNOLOGIES IN… BULGARIA

Vasil Lukarev

Abstract: The article explores the opportunities for innovation in urban infrastructure through the implementation of smart poles as a sustainable Internet of Things (IoT) technology in the Bulgarian context. Faced with challenges such as pollution, energy inefficiency and social polarization, modern cities increasingly need smart solutions to improve the quality of life and efficient resource management. The proposed concept includes the transformation and modernization of the existing infrastructure from street poles into multifunctional devices equipped with sensors, cameras, lighting systems, air monitoring modules with real-time data collection and analysis capabilities. Through a detailed analysis of the business environment in Bulgaria, market needs and consumer preferences, a sustainable entrepreneurial IoT model with applicable value in different urban scenarios is presented. The model focuses on low investment costs, use of existing infrastructure, modular architecture and monetization opportunities through digital services and platforms. The empirical part includes prototyping and testing in a real-world environment, as well as assessing the impact on energy efficiency, safety and social connectivity. The results of a study show that smart poles can become a key component of the sustainability of cities in Bulgaria, while providing a basis for a new business model based on data and digital services. The article contributes to the topic of digital transformation of the urban environment by proposing a practical and applicable approach to implementation of IoT innovations.
